Eye - flashing light

Flashing light in eye

Flashing light in the eye can be caused by:

1. Migraine or ocular migraine.

2. Detached retina. A retinal detachment is a medical emergency. It needs immediate attention or risk losing sight in the eye. It is often accompanied by new floaters and/or loss of vision like a curtain or grey/dark segment across the eye. Risk factors for retinal detachment are ageing, previous eye surgery including for cataracts or retinal detachment, previous severe eye injury or other eye diseases, extreme nearsightedness (myopia), taking certain pharmaceuticals such as the statin Lipitor.

3. Vitreous detachment. The jelly vitreous fluid in the eye shrinks with age. The new void can cause the flashing. It is important that you see an ophthalmologist immediately to rule out retinal detachment. Not much can be done for vitreous detachment, but it is an important warning that should not be ignored.
