I had been suffering the symptoms of arthritis for years and looked like an old bent woman. My doctor prescribed several drugs to reduce my pain. Their side effects such as bone loss, weight gain and mood swings added to my illness as I realised after a few years. Since following the diet and lifestyle you recommend in Grow Youthful my pain has disappeared and I am off the drugs. Kathryn Kennedy, Byron Bay, Australia

Most people are heading in the wrong direction

Many years ago, I used to think that doctors and health professionals were the best source of advice on how to look after my body. After all, they have spent years studying, are licensed and accredited, and have experience based on thousands of patients. Today, if I was seriously injured or had a life-threatening infection, I would be grateful for their professional treatment. However, when it comes to many of our modern degenerative diseases, most doctors are no help at all. In fact, they often contribute to these diseases.

The focus on drugs and on treating symptoms rather than causes has lead to five minute medicine. Rarely will you find a doctor who will spend the necessary time with you. Even when you do, most have little holistic knowledge. There is no connection between mind, body and spirit in modern medicine. For example, in an entire six year medical curriculum, the student doctors might spend two days studying diet and nutrition.

Most doctors that I meet are not particularly healthy. Nearly every nutritionist I have ever met has been overweight (and under-aware of it). The healthiest, youngest-looking people I know are definitely not those depending on the advice of the medical profession. Clearly, our society is not providing most people with good health and a long, functional life

Mis-information

Advertising and the media are responsible for a lot of the mis-information out there. The food processing, medical and pharmaceutical drug industries have the power to create laws and regulations that benefit themselves, and to influence the health messages put out by the media. Virtually all university and industry research today is financed and influenced by the corporate world. There is almost no money for any kind of research "with no strings attached". These industries are following their own agendas, making money and serving their members, with complete disregard for the health effects on their unsuspecting consumers. Heart disease, cancer, obesity and premature ageing affect the majority of people today. Drug companies thrive when people remain sick. The food industry finds it most profitable to produce products very different to those that your body needs for health and longevity.

I have carefully sought out independent and unbiased research when writing Grow Youthful, and the results have been life-changing for myself and thousands of readers. Please accept this book with an open mind - some of what is suggests is quite contrary to what most people have been led to believe. It may be quite challenging!
